2. Dress appropriately. Don’t let the Marathon Expo’s intimidating assortment of high-tech outfits and gadgets discourage you. Focus on proper footwear, and make the switch months before the big day, especially if you’ve got your heart set on Vibram’s Five Fingers.

3. Fuel up, but save Katy’s smoked salmon potato pancakes for another morning. A small meal, an hour before the race, is ideal. Low glycemic carbohydrates like bananas, yogurt or apples will keep your blood sugar and energy levels stable.
4. Carry your camera. If it’s lightweight, the amazing photo opportunities far outweigh the inconvenience of toting it along. Plus, if you need to catch your breath, just take an extra moment to compose that “perfect shot”. Shame averted.
5. Run with a buddy, preferably a motivated, ceaselessly positive buddy who followed rule 1 and doesn’t mind being your cheerleader. Remember to be a good buddy, too, and if that means encouraging your well-trained friend to speed ahead of you, so be it. Catch up at the post-race beer tent.

6. Drink up, and double-check that “water” cup. Around mile 7, the race beverage station coordinators pulled a little switcheroo on us. “Oh yes, water! Delicious, refreshing, hydrating… beer?!” If that sounds like your kind of party, go for it, just make sure to hit up the water tables, too.
7. Smile… for the fans, the volunteers, the musicians, your Marathon Fotos, and the finish!
