Hot Pink Flamingos and Beyond: A Sneak Peek Inside The Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Newest Exhibit

At first, The Monterey Bay Aquarium’s “Stories of Hope In A Changing Sea” appear secondary to the exhibit’s feathered headliners, but they get more than their fair shake inside the expansive and creatively presented walk-through exhibit, which opens to the general public today. You’ll be excited to discover that the Hot Pink Flamingos are just the beginning — literally, they’re placed immediately inside the entrance, and what lies beyond is an inspiring homage to 25 years of education, conservation, and hope.

The exhibit’s creators spent the last quarter decade paying close attention to what enthralls and personally engages the public, resulting in an installation that’s more original, hands-on, and, yes, educational, than ever before. One thing it’s not: a boring guilt-trip encouraging us to drastically change our lifestyles, or else. The cheeky graphic displays manage to promote optimism and hope without sidestepping the realities of our endangered ecosystems, and oft-repeated conservation tips feel anything but, thanks to fun, visually engaging stations that feature practical, pain-free solutions to daily dilemmas. All the while, you’re surrounded by penguins, jellies, coral reef dwellers, and sea turtles — living proof that our climate’s survival is worth fighting for.

And of course, the flamingos don’t disappoint. Click on the video below to see them in action, then explore the other fascinating animals through our photo-tour.

Stories of Hope in a Changing Sea: A Sneak-Peek Photo Tour

Got Cows?

A tongue-in-cheek presentation describes how we can minimize methane’s adverse environmental effects, and features a gas-mask sporting methane-maker.

Spotted Jellies

Increasing the scope of the exhibit’s diverse animal life were these mesmerizing Spotted Jellies, which ride the ocean’s currents in diaphanous swarms. Like what you see? Even more jellies reside in the Aquarium’s Outer Bay exhibit.

Visitors Wish for Climate Protection

The Aquarium’s platform for environmental wishes and ideas, a nifty way to inspire some much-needed public conversation.

Coral Reef

Gorgeously presented “fish tanks” are an Aquarium specialty, as demonstrated by their expansive and ingeniously designed new Coral Reef. Anyone interested in the creation and implementation of these great exhibits should pick up “A Fascination For Fish” by David C. Powell, a life-long scuba diver, underwater pioneer, and one of the creative minds responsible for the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Magellanic Penguins

Courtesy and kindness are typical of The Peninsula’s visitors and residents, even the very little ones, who patiently took turns with the coolest stations and politely shared the penguin exhibit’s prime “beak-to-nose” vantage points.

Speak Up

Politics get personal at this podium, which encourages visitors to voice their concerns to Senators via E-Cards, an easy way to personally instigate change.

Sea Turtle

Threatened by rising ocean temperatures and levels, the sea turtles’ livelihood depends on us, and the exhibit’s accompanying information-packed displays lead the way.

Hope you all get the chance to experience these exhibits and inspiring messages for yourselves, and until then, remember…
