Carmel Plaza is packed with swanky shops, cafes, an outstanding cheese shop, and an award winning restaurant. You might say it’s unmissable, except that time after time, Peninsula residents and visitors manage to speed right by its discreet, slightly obscured location. It’s perched off to the left atop downtown Carmel-By-The-Sea, at the juncture of Ocean Avenue and Mission. This “hidden” shopping oasis is packed with options, and these three spots, with their distinctive products and especially personable service, are my favorites.
The always-evolving decor is nearly as fun and stylish as their clothes, so take your time browsing all corners of Carmel Plaza’s expansive Anthropology, especially the far left corner; home of the “bargain room”, where you can find their awesome styles at a third of the price. Also worth checking out; their home designs section. It’s packed with whimsical wares that’ll set your imagination on overdrive, and perhaps releasing your interior-designer alter ego; the one that knows it’s definitely time to upgrade to the painted ceramic doorknobs.
The rustic, Asian-inspired, and intimate Flying Fish Grill is a local favorite, and a terrific value. The reasonably priced and generously portioned meals are created with love by the head chef, and owner, Kenny Fukumoto, and the knowledgeable and attentive servers guarantee an exceptionally memorable experience. The Flying Fish is deservedly popular year-round, so remember to call ahead for a reservation.
When I mentioned to the veteran wine and cheese connoisseurs manning the Cheese Shop that they’re considered by many to be the best shop in the Plaza, they politely and firmly corrected me; “We’re the best shop in Carmel.” Their confidence is justified. Over the last 35 years, they’ve gained a loyal base of foodie enthusiasts who look forward to the personal attention, recommendations, and sample after delicious sample that are a mainstay at The Cheese Shop. Their top-quality products herald from all corners of the globe, and include an impressive collection of wine, which you’re encouraged to sample at the wine bar. Basically, around here, they’re leg-en-dary. Hanging above the bar is a hand-written sign that succinctly states their goal for each customer; “Eat cheese… drink wine… life life happy!!”
